Activities for Dementia Clients

Many clients in need of in-home care are in the early stages of Dementia. They have the tendency to misplace items or to easily lose focus in a conversation. However, each patient progresses differently and can show any number of signs or symptoms. Your job is to create a comfortable environment where they can be safe and live well.

There are a number of things you can do as a care provider to help your clients find enjoyment and fulfillment in their daily lives regardless of which stage they are in. The first thing you should do is educate yourself. Learn what you can about the disease because the more you know, the better you are able to help your clients.

Arranging activities for your client is one of the best things you can do for them. It helps them feel valuable and in control. When planning activities it very important to remember patients should feel like each task was a pleasure and a success, therefore, adapt all activities to meet your client’s skill level.

Many patients find comfort in learning new ways to express themselves, such as music, art or photography. They can play instruments, draw and color pictures, or take pictures. Many people enjoy looking at art and photography as well.

Writing can also be very enjoyable for many patients. They can write a letter to a family member or old friend. Or even write down some of their favorite story from their past. Offer to write as they dictate to help them stay focused.

Another good activity is playing games. There are thousands of games out there, from crosswords in the newspaper to games on an iPad. Keep trying new games until you find one your clients enjoys.

Listening to music together can be a great activity. Music has been proven to reach Dementia patients at all stages. Some people like to make a playlist of the hits during their patient’s youth, while others prefer to enjoy hits of today. Talk to your patient about the type of music they enjoy and start from there.

Don’t just listen to music but sing it as well. You will be surprised to find out how many patients enjoy singing or humming their favorite tunes.

You can try reading a new book or even one of their favorites. You may find they have trouble following a long story such as a novel, if so, try reading highlights from the newspaper, short stories, poems or even famous quotes.

If they enjoy cooking they may be interested in helping prepare the meal, they can do activities such as shelling peas or sorting beans.

Most patients like to keep their hands busy and feel useful. With that in mind, you can string beads together or even string Cheerios to place outside as a bird feeder. Many women spend hours tending their nails if given the supplies and many patients also enjoy small household task such as folding towels.

Whatever you decide, remember to plan activities that are at your client’s skill level and will bring them joy.
