Computer Security and the Illusion of Control.

Disclaimer: This is my personal research, ideas and rants are of my own.

This story is for a general audience. So, let’s get some basic understanding of what computer security is according to Wikipedia:

In short, the modern world we live in relies on computer systems to operate properly. In our hospitals, in our children’s school, in our streets, up in the air with airplanes and satellites, its everywhere.

Perhaps this importance is captured succinctly by this statement:

Complexity, both in terms of politics and technology, and complexity, is the enemy of computer security.

Based on my experience in computer security, a complex technology is harder to secure mostly because of the following:

It takes a while for modern technology to achieve a minimum level of security. We define a minimum level of security here as technology that is vulnerability-free and respects user privacy.

Consumers will start playing around with the tech, looking for holes and thresholds, bypassing and abusing controls. An activity often conducted by technology tinkerers we call as “Hackers”.
