If you could only choose 1: weight training or cardio?

This is a pretty popular question that fitness professionals hear often. Straight to the point: weight training. Here’s why:

When you weight train you burn calories not only during the session but after; your metabolism can be boosted up to 38 hours! Say you’re in a Netflix and chill mood (like really chill guys 🙄) and normally you burn 60 cal per hour. If you weight train that morning or even the night before, you are now burning 70 cal per hour! If you multiply that caloric increase by 38 hrs, that’s a fuckin lot for not doing anything. So basically after an hour of lifting, you’ll continue to burn calories all day long because it raises your BMR (basic metabolic rate). Your BMR is the total calories your body needs to function: breathe, sleep, cell production, circulation, protein synthesis; you know, all the life enabling things. Adding 1 pound of muscle increase 50 calorie burn to your BMR!

With cardio you’ll have to be doing a fuckin lot to even compare to the amount of caloric expense you get from weight training. Depending on the intensity and duration, you could burn between 500–800 calories each cardio session. This usually takes a significant amount of time with no reward of burning after. So you’ll have to continue these long cardio sessions. While weight training might not have as much burning during the actual session compared to cardio, the overall calorie-burning benefits you get from it blows cardio out of the water.
