Independent Power to the People

Where does our independence reside?

Our Declaration of Independence gives the best reminder there is of what makes us unique, as “We hold these truths to be self-evident.” Meant to be a place of transparency, the United States stands built with freedom in mind, created so any individual to step on this land will earn the liberty to live honestly.

If only that honesty stayed embedded in our base, and yet we can easily peel back our ugly layers and see the messy duress our boots began in. As sparklers dance in the dawning evening, rivers of blood lay beneath the surface of our dug-up Earth, leading me to ponder curiously, where does this independence exist?

America now teeters on a precipice of people searching for the transparency once promised. We dive head-first into our politics, our church, and our state, scouring for accountability in the powers that be. If only we could harness our fire-crackling energy into keeping ourselves unified in these trying times. Maybe that would keep our country, ’tis of thee, as honest as it can be?

Yes, a grim fog sits beneath our American flag, but the basic principles we yearned to instill still exist. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are free to reign within all of us this Fourth of July. Already I see the red, white, and blue hues, prompting pride in the USA and its defining term, ‘independence.’ Even when we only see ourselves in place of our neighbors, we can always pivot around and realize the unity instilled between us. Out of droves of shapes, sizes, and colors, the American people still amass into a whole unit.

Unfortunately, sometimes we are aloof to our unity between the blinding partisanship of our state and the toweringly elite domes of our churches. But, sure enough, on this Fourth of July, I recognize unity within you, me, and every backbone that created the infrastructure of this country. Between the souls lost in defense and dispersal, America’s power will always and forever be in the hands of its people.

Ergo, during our explosive celebrations for this Independence Day, I want to recollect what made the USA’s independence so revolutionary. If we took the concept of separation and changed its definition, we may get to live in independent unity the way we deserve. If we kept our church and state separate from each other and ourselves, our vital spirituality would be all that was left to believe. Gliding amongst each other on this holiday and every other day, harmony would be wedged between the eclectic mix of lives that make up our country.

The American people were placed together for this very purpose. Our power does not lie within our state, within our church, or within any governmental power that proceeds. The power is in us; our independent sooted hands, our independent, spiritual beliefs, even down to our glorious light-sky symphonies. Whether born on this soil or raised here indefinitely, on Independence Day, we are defined by our independent unity, by the imperfectly pure power of our people.
