Running to Freedom. Freedom to Run

Growing up in communism I learned to run from oppression without being a runner.

And books have been the open gate to freedom and an open mind to the outer world, as they taught me so much about how people lived in other countries. I was particularly interested in America, and to this day, I cannot believe that my husband and I have lived in this wonderful country for 26 years, where we have accomplished so much because we worked hard and valued all the opportunities that we were given.

As US citizens, we can affirm with all our hearts: “Happy birthday, America. You make 245 look good,” as the sign at the end of our street says.

At 41 years old after having been a passionate and competitive tennis player, I had become a runner. Running was so freeing. Having been a runner for six years, I can say that Independence Day means running a race to celebrate the freedom to run, to be myself, to move in this world with ease and gratitude.
