We are still a democracy

But the introduction of a vaccine passport is exacerbating already polarized views

I wander into the store and notice the man behind me is not wearing a mask. I turn and say politely “you need to put a mask on”. Fortunately, he is just forgetful and not an asshole. He pulls one out of his pocket and puts it on. But I wonder to myself how many anti-maskers the store staff has to deal with in a day, and how they deal with the ones who are not just forgetful but choosing not to put one on, and therefore ready to argue about it. Not always in a nice way.

My province has just this week re-introduced the mask mandate due to growing case numbers and the Delta variant which seems to be taking over. Apparently, this is the beginning of the fourth wave. In addition, in a few weeks, we will have a “vaccine passport”. Where I live if you have not had your first vaccine by September 13th you will not be permitted in restaurants, bars, casinos and few other places. Your vaccine passport will be either on your phone or in the form of some kind of paper copy for those without phones. And yes, those people without cell phones do exist. I even know a few of them. You will produce said proof to enter these premises. And at a later date, you will need to have had your second vaccine with evidence of that too.

This announcement apparently puts us into what some are calling a “police state”. Right.

Some workplaces are requesting their employees get vaccinated with repercussions if they do not. Consequences that include being fired or having mandatory regular testing.

Most folks where I live are in favour of what the government (and businesses) are doing. Some of course would wish them to do more; be stricter, wish they had not opened up our province to those from other places in the way we have. Had been more careful and not removed the mask mandate so soon.

But then there are those who are vehemently opposed especially to the vaccine passport. Some of them are now calling our country “undemocratic” and protesting in greater numbers. There is a cohort of them who believe our human rights are being jeopardized in a big way. Sorry, but not being able to go to a restaurant because you aren’t vaccinated is a rights violation…
