Find the good guys. Carry the fire. And a gun.

Words of wisdom from Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road, in which a father and his young son walk alone through a post-apocalyptic American landscape.

All they have is a pistol for protection, the clothes on their backs, a grocery cart of scavenged supplies — and each other.

As they make their way, the father trains his son to survive in the world. He instills within him a both a sense of hope and a sense of rational apprehension.

I found this portion of their conversation applicable to our current events.

The following question naturally arises: How can the boy tell the good guys from the bad guys?

Answer: The good guys won’t try to take his gun away.

After his father’s death, the young boy walked out to the road alone. He stood in the road and waited, the pistol in his hand.

A man approached him. He carried a shotgun upside down over his shoulder on a braided leather lanyard and he wore a nylon bandolier filled with shells for the gun.

The boy told the man about his father’s death. The man, who was travelling with his wife and children, expressed his condolences.

The boy then said: “I dont know what to do.”

The man replied: “I think you should come with me.”

The boy complied. Later on, the boy tried to hand the pistol to the man. The man wouldn’t take it.

In this world, the good guys have to carry the fire. And a gun.
